The excerpt as a Short
What this passage does
The novel opens on a single sentence of motion: a young man leaves his garret on a hot July evening and walks "slowly, as though in hesitation". Before anything has happened, Dostoevsky has given us the heat, the city, the young man's reluctance, and the room he is leaving.
The next sentences explain the reluctance. He has avoided his landlady on the staircase, because he is in debt to her and afraid to meet her, and his garret, under the roof of a five-storied house, is "more like a cupboard than a room".
The text
On an exceptionally hot evening early in July a young man came out of the garret in which he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, towards K. bridge. He had successfully avoided meeting his landlady on the staircase. His garret was under the roof of a high, five-storied house and was more like a cupboard than a room.
